A Capitalist Interlude

June 25, 2007

i’m supposed to be number one on everybody’s list, we’ll see what happens when i no longer existI’m going to take a break from my regularly scheduled program here to make a suggestion to you. Paul Neilan’s hilarious, stunning, beyond-superlative book Apathy and Other Small Victories is coming out in paperback tomorrow. Even though it was only published last year, I can safely say that it’s the funniest book I’ve ever read, and I can almost guarantee you the same. I’m recommending that if you enjoy reading and humour and life, you should buy a copy tomorrow, or as soon as is possible after.

See, this is Paul Neilan’s first book, and it would be to all our benefit if he writes more of them. Unfortunately, being a largely unknown genius author doesn’t pay as well as it would in a just universe, so Neilan is forced to continue working the same crap temp jobs that the hero of Apathy and Other Small Victories hates so desperately. While hearing him eloquently complain about it makes for some very amusing reading on his blog, it’s hardly conducive to his career as a full-time writer. Every book he sells is a step away from sleeping in office washroom stalls and collating, and a step towards terrifying brilliance. Do yourself and everyone you know a favour, and buy Apathy and Other Small Victories. Read an excerpt here, which only hints at the unfiltered gold inside, then go to Amazon or Chapters or the nearest bookstore you can find and grab a copy. You won’t regret it.

Hell, the paperback version only costs eleven dollars! How can you pass this up? That comes out to something like five cents for every time you’re going to laugh out loud while reading it, and probably a little less than a buck for each time you’re going to re-read it this year alone. Frankly, I’m not sure you can afford to not buy Apathy and Other Small Victories.
